Senior Robotics Simulation Engineer
Senior Robotics Simulation Engineer
Join us to develop nationwide autonomous delivery robots!
Notice: While the position offers a hybrid work arrangement, we kindly ask that only candidates currently residing in Japan apply.
■ Recruitment Background:
With the enforcement of Japan’s revised Road Traffic Law in April 2023, autonomous delivery robots such as LOMBY are now legally permitted to operate on public roads. Japan is currently one of the few countries in the world with a legal framework supporting autonomous robotic delivery in urban environments.
At LOMBY, we develop both hardware and software entirely in-house, leveraging Japan’s strong manufacturing ecosystem to build highly reliable delivery robots designed for real-world deployment.
As we move toward mass production and large-scale deployment in 2026, we are seeking a Senior Simulation Engineer who can accelerate the development and validation of our autonomous driving technology through high-fidelity simulation environments and scalable testing infrastructure.
This role is ideal for engineers passionate about solving complex robotics challenges and contributing directly to the social implementation of autonomous mobility systems in dense urban environments.
■ Job Description:
・Development of simulation environments for autonomous delivery robots
・Validation and evaluation of autonomous driving systems in simulated environments
・Scenario generation and edge-case testing for public-road operation
・Sensor simulation and digital twin development
・Integration of simulation pipelines with real-world robot data
■ Specific Tasks:
LOMBY is currently developing its robots toward mass production in 2026. Our 5th-generation pre-production models have already been deployed in collaboration with Seven-Eleven Japan and are operating daily across nine stores in Tokyo.
In this role, you will be responsible for building simulation systems that improve the safety, robustness, and scalability of our autonomous driving stack. You will work closely with autonomy, perception, and robotics engineers to reproduce complex real-world environments in simulation and accelerate development cycles.
A key challenge is accurately modeling Japanese urban environments, where robots must safely coexist with pedestrians, cyclists, narrow streets, parked vehicles, and unpredictable human behavior.
You will have the opportunity to work across the full robotics development lifecycle—from simulation architecture and algorithm validation to real-world deployment and operational feedback analysis.
This position follows a hybrid work model. Candidates are expected to reside in Tokyo and be able to visit the office or operational sites as needed.
■ Company Overview
LOMBY is a robotics startup founded in April 2022 with the mission of providing affordable and stable 24/7 labor for last-mile logistics through autonomous delivery robots.
We develop our autonomous delivery robot “LOMBY” entirely in-house, covering both hardware and software, with the goal of enabling safe public-road operation.
In October 2024, we raised a total of JPY 270 million, including investment from Suzuki Motor Corporation, and are advancing development toward mass production.
Our efforts toward real-world deployment have also been recognized by NEDO (New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization). Since FY2022, our projects have been selected for government-backed support programs, including NEDO’s Deep Tech Startup Support Program in 2024, which includes grants exceeding JPY 2 billion.
■ Media Coverage
Below is a video featuring LOMBY covered by TBS, one of Japan’s major television broadcasters.
■ Required Skills
・Strong programming proficiency in C++, C#, or Python.
・Hands-on experience with robotics simulation frameworks (e.g., Gazebo, Isaac Sim, CARLA, or Unity).
・Proficiency with ROS2 and comfort developing within Linux-based environments.
・Experience simulating robotics sensors, including Cameras, IMUs, LiDAR, and GNSS.
・Proven track record of developing autonomous systems or robotics software.
・Solid understanding of core robotics concepts, including perception, localization, mapping (SLAM), planning, and control systems.
・Experience designing simulation-based validation and testing pipelines.
■ Preferred Skills
・Experience with autonomous driving or mobile robotics systems
・Experience with synthetic data generation or digital twin technologies
・Experience with LiDAR, camera, and IMU sensor simulation
・Experience using OSS frameworks such as Autoware
・Experience with cloud/distributed simulation infrastructure
・Background in Computer Science, Robotics, or related fields
・Contributions to open source projects or robotics competitions
・Conversational-level English proficiency
・Experience leading engineering projects or mentoring engineers
